IT’S IN THE DETAILS
Each day, we get dressed and express ourselves through clothing. A Costume Designer takes this task further: to tell a story, reveal character, enhance action, captivate the senses, and ultimately turns the garments an actor wears into a work of art.
Twice Emmy-nominated Matthew Hemesath finds joy in bringing characters to life through Costume Design. His career encompasses a wide range of productions across theatre, film, and television.
Recent designs include Seasons 2 and 3 of the Tina Fey-produced comedy Girls5Eva and the Peacock medical drama Dr. Death starring Alec Baldwin and Christian Slater. He earned an Emmy nomination for Excellence in Period Costume Design for his work on Showtime’s The First Lady, starring Viola Davis as Michelle Obama.
He began his career designing for Paper Mill Playhouse, Off-Broadway, and assisting on Broadway shows and National Tours, including Jersey Boys. He toiled on the wardrobe crew of Saturday Night Live for eight years, making costumes, dressing actors, and working on The Lonely Island Digital Shorts.
Matthew is proud to be half of the design duo that created the now iconic John Wick look for Keanu Reeves, serving as Associate Costume Designer on the first three films of the blockbuster action franchise. His first Emmy nomination came from his work as Co-Costume Designer on the beloved children's program Sesame Street.
Matthew was raised on a farm in Iowa, earned a Theatre BA from Coe College in Cedar Rapids and a Costume Design MFA from The Carnegie Mellon School of Drama. He has lived in New York for 20 years.
